Glencoe & District Historical Society

1. To promote, encourage and foster the study of local history and genealogy including original research.
2. To collect and preserve information, including books, manuscripts, typescripts, charts, maps, photographs, photostats, microfilms, tapes and related material for such historical study.
3. To reproduce some of the talks presented to the Society, as well as other research and materials, particularly relating to the region and to sell such reproductions.
4. To encourage, support and solicit research information on heritage buildings in our District as well as lend our support to other community groups who are active and interested in the preservation and restoration of heritage buildings.

Membership Meeting & Presentation: "Our Veterans from WWI". Ekfrid veterans from who gave their lives in the First World War. Military researcher Brian Angyal pays tribute to our heroes.

Membership Meeting & Presentation: "The Gray-Dort Car" manufactured in Chatham Ontario. Speaker Darcy Fallon, a descendant of the Gray family.

Membership Meeting & Presentation: "Victoria Order of Nurses". 115 years served by the Victoria Order of Nurses, presented by Teresa Verkley, V.O.N. Co-ordinatoir of Volunteers, Middlesex-Elgin.

“Battle of the Longwoods” Memorial Service annual event arranged by the Royal Scots Military Re-enactment Society. This is an annual community event held on the first Sunday of March. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath contact Betty Simpson, or email the Historical Society.

Membership Annual Meeting: Dessert and coffee at 7:00, followed by annual meeting. Finish with a fun "Show and Tell". Everyone bring an item of heritage interest.

Membership Meeting & Presentation: Dr. Nina Reid-Maroney, Assistant Professor of History at Huron College, U.W.O. presents "The Promised Land Project". Dr. Reid-Maroney will speak on Black immigration to Ontario, including the Underground Railroad, and various settlements in our area including Buxton, Dresden, and the Wilberforce Settlement.

Community Memorial Service at Longwoods Cemetery, 22338 Melbourne Road. A summertime service at a designated cemetery is an annual tradition for the Historical society. Cemeteries are steeped in history, and provide an excellent backdrop to the telling of an area's history. Bring lawn chairs. No rain date.
